Our Story

Built by Operators, for Operators

PrimeLight Design didn’t start in a boardroom; it started behind a lens.

Our founder, Steve Lord, has spent over 25 years as a Lighting Cameraman. From fashioning pretend studio cameras out of crisp boxes at age eight to shooting for the BBC, Channel 4, and ITV, Steve’s career has been defined by a "hands-on" approach. But like any working pro, he grew tired of the "Frankenrigs" and flimsy gear that often slowed down a shoot.

The "Rant" That Started a Business

As technology evolved—from the DSLR revolution to the rise of tablet-based prompting—Steve noticed a frustrating trend: gear was becoming more affordable, but less ergonomic. We were gaining filmic quality but losing the robust, reliable tools that make a long day on set manageable.

PrimeLight Design was born from a simple mission: to build tools that work the way real operators work.

Innovation Born of Necessity

Our first breakthrough, the VoxBox Pro, wasn't a product of market research—it was a solution to a problem. Facing a "down-the-lens" interview shoot in Portugal with no budget for heavy rental gear, Steve built his own compact version using MDF and an old teleprompter mirror. It was sturdy, rigged to his 15mm rails, and fit in his luggage.

When fellow DPs saw the results and started asking to buy one, Steve knew he wasn't the only one looking for a better way to work.

From Side Hustle to Global Kit

What began as a passion project in a workshop has evolved into a global manufacturing business. Today, PrimeLight Design is a trusted name among broadcasters and crews worldwide, from Netflix, BBC, The New York Times to the teams behind 24 Hours in A&E.

  • ZeePrompt: Our reinvention of the teleprompter—a one-piece, carbon-fibre infused unit that rigs in seconds.
  • VoxBox Pro MK3: The latest evolution of our flagship interview tool, refined by years of feedback from the field.
  • UK-Based Manufacturing: We utilise industrial-grade 3D printing and precision engineering in our UK facility to ensure every piece of kit is built to survive the daily grind.

Our Values

We’ve grown from a "one-man-band" to a Boutique British manufacturer shipping units as far as Hawaii and Singapore, but our core principles remain the same:

  1. Clever, user-focused design.
  2. Robust, field-tested build quality.
  3. Excellent, operator-to-operator customer service.

We aren't just selling equipment; we’re sharing the tools we use ourselves. Whether it's folding flat for overhead luggage or rigging fast to catch a fleeting moment, we make gear that makes your life easier.
